Today saw me working again at those crude machines at the factory. Tragically I am afraid I must write of a terrible accident that occurred during the course of my daily work routine; Charles didn’t live to see the end of the work shift. Ernst, though still not completely healthy was well enough for the unit to make some more progress towards the lake (we had to stop several times so that he could vomit, but nothing exceedingly bad). It’s been two days since Hauptmann von Raben and most of the others surrendered Mora to the British and French forces. I managed to escape with infanteristen Ernst and Heinrich as well as three Kamerunians, as the officers negotiated the details of their capitulation to the enemy. Several rifles and plenty of ammunition were acquired and stuffed in a couple of duffle bags from the armory. After the year-long siege, the leftover rations were old and only a small amount still remained. I stored what little was left and threw them in with the
