Journal of Unteroffizier Mickel Wulf
(Found near Tschadsee on 17 January, 1984)

22 February, 1914
It’s been two days since Hauptmann von Raben and most of the others surrendered Mora to the British and French forces. I managed to escape with infanteristen Ernst and Heinrich as well as three Kamerunians, as the officers negotiated the details of their capitulation to the enemy. Several rifles and plenty of ammunition were acquired and stuffed in a couple of duffle bags from the armory. After the year-long siege, the leftover rations were old and only a small amount still remained. I stored what little was left and threw them in with the weapons, though I hoped to find something more edible in the forest near Lake Chad. You could only stand the taste of hardtack for so long without regurgitating it. So far, no such luck in finding food but we are still another day away from the shores.

It’s strange; we should have reached Lake Chad by now. I consulted the charts and it seems like we are still on track yet we are not. Simply unexplainable, but finally we have broken our trek of bad luck. Ernst found some berries growing in the bushes nearby, though I am still apprehensive about whether or not they are edible. I cautioned him not to eat too many of them but he threw caution to the wind and wolfed down the strange fruits. The best course of action now is to camp here for the night and see how he reacts to them.
The Kamerunians seem kind of spooked and keep talking amongst themselves, might be a good idea to keep my gun close tonight. At least the bugs don’t seem to be too bad.

Luck has taken a turn for the worst. Ernst has become quite ill from ingesting the berries so it is safe to assume we will make no progress today as we wait for his condition to improve. Heinrich seems to be the only one other than myself who isn’t sick or acting strangely, as the natives seem even more isolated and nervous today.

One of the Kamerunians came up to me today and pleaded that we head back to Mora and simply submit to the enemy as these were cursed lands. When I pressed him for more details, he refused to elaborate anymore on the matter and returned to his two comrades. Ernst is still in a fevered state.
The first part of a series of journal entries in the Cthulhu universe. This one involves a german army officer in Africa during the first world war and his unfortunate encounter with cosmic forces.
